Our take on the OFF! Deep Woods Sportsmen Insect Repellent 1 oz Spray (Case of 12)

OFF! Deep Woods Sportsmen is an aerosol-free pump spray repellent built around DEET, sold here as a case of twelve 1 oz bottles. Each bottle is small enough for a pocket, tackle box or daypack, so the case suits people who want a spare in every bag or vehicle. The 1 oz size is also carry-on friendly, unlike full-size aerosols.

Best forHunters, anglers and hikers who want a pocket-size bottle per bag
Buying in bulk for a household, cabin or group trip
Travelers who need a non-aerosol repellent under the 3.4 oz liquid limit
Keeping spares in glove boxes, packs and tackle boxes
Pros
  • Pump spray, so no aerosol propellant and no pressurized can to puncture
  • 1 oz bottle fits a shirt pocket or hip pouch
  • Deep Woods formula is one of the stronger OFF! DEET options
  • Case of 12 means a bottle for each bag, vehicle and pack
  • Works on skin, hair and clothing
Cons
  • Twelve small bottles cost more per ounce than one large bottle
  • 1 oz runs out fast with heavy reapplication on long days
  • Pump spray is less convenient to apply than an aerosol in the field
  • DEET can damage plastics, watch crystals and synthetic fabrics
  • Strong odor and greasy feel until it dries

  • Small bottle disappears in a pocket or pack
  • Pump spray avoids aerosol cans and propellant
  • Long enough protection between reapplications for most outings
Cons
  • Bottle runs dry quickly with frequent reapplication
  • Spray can leave skin greasy and smells strongly
  • DEET can mar plastic gear and synthetic clothing
  • Pump mechanism can clog or sputter near the end of a bottle

Questions and answers

Is a case of twelve 1 oz bottles worth it?
If you want a bottle in several bags, vehicles or packs, yes. Per ounce it costs more than a single large bottle, so heavy daily users are better off buying bigger.
How much DEET is in it?
The Deep Woods Sportsmen pump spray is a DEET-based formula in the higher-concentration Deep Woods range. Check the bottle label for the exact percentage, since it varies by OFF! product.
Can I take it in a carry-on?
Yes. At 1 oz it is well under the 3.4 oz liquid limit, and it is a pump spray rather than an aerosol.
Will it damage my gear?
DEET can soften plastics, synthetic fabrics, watch crystals and painted surfaces. Apply it to skin and hands, keep it off gear, and wash hands after use.
How often do I need to reapply?
In heavy mosquito pressure, expect to reapply every few hours, sooner if you sweat or swim. A 1 oz bottle covers a few outings at that rate.
When is it cheapest?
Multi-packs and cases usually drop in price before summer and around Memorial Day and Labor Day sales. Watch the price history for a dip below the recent range.
