Our take on the Oninaki Nintendo Switch

Oninaki is an action RPG from Tokyo RPG Factory, the studio behind I Am Setsuna and Lost Sphear, released for Nintendo Switch in 2019. You play as a Watcher who guides souls between life and death, switching between Daemon companions that change your attacks and skills in real time. It is a shorter, story-driven game with a somber tone rather than a long open-world RPG. The best new price is $39.80 at eBay as of November 5, 2026, and only one store lists it new, so it rarely sells below that.

Pros
  • Daemon switching gives combat real variety
  • Somber story about death and reincarnation stands out from typical RPGs
  • Runs well in handheld mode on Switch
  • Shorter length suits players who don't want a 60-hour commitment
Cons
  • Repetitive dungeon layouts and enemy design
  • Story pacing drags in the middle chapters
  • Combat can feel button-mashy on easier difficulties
  • Side quests are thin and formulaic
