Our take on the ORICO MetaCube Pro 2-Bay NAS Storage System

The ORICO MetaCube Pro is a two-bay network storage box for sharing files across your devices and backing up over RAID. It holds 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SATA drives, runs ORICO's Weline OS, and offers RAID 0, RAID 1 and LVM with one-click backup. It has a single 1GbE port, USB-A and USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 ports, and 8GB of eMMC flash for the system. The 40TB figure is the maximum raw capacity with two 20TB drives, not included. • Compact desktop footprint at about 231 x 150 x 140 mm
Cons
  • Single 1GbE port caps network speed at roughly 110 MB/s
  • 8GB eMMC system storage is small for apps and caching
  • Weline OS has a much smaller app ecosystem than Synology or QNAP
  • No rack mounting and no HDMI or expansion slot
  • 40TB requires two 20TB drives sold separately

Questions and answers

Is the ORICO MetaCube Pro worth it?
It suits basic file sharing and RAID 1 backup at a low price. If you need fast 2.5GbE transfers, Docker apps or a mature app store, a Synology or QNAP two-bay costs more but does more.
Does the 40TB capacity include drives?
No. 40TB is the maximum raw capacity with two 20TB drives installed. You buy the drives separately, and RAID 1 halves usable space to 20TB.
Which RAID mode should I use?
Use RAID 1 for two drives so your data survives one drive failing. RAID 0 combines both drives for speed and full capacity but loses everything if either drive fails.
How fast is the network connection?
It has one 1GbE port, so real-world transfers top out around 110 MB/s. That is fine for backups and streaming but slow for editing large video files over the network.
What drives are compatible?
It takes 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch SATA HDDs or SSDs. Use NAS-rated drives such as WD Red or Seagate IronWolf for 24/7 operation.
When is it cheapest?
Two-bay NAS boxes usually drop during Black Friday and back-to-school sales. Set a price alert and compare against Synology and TerraMaster two-bay models before buying.
