Our take on the Ozone 500 Boys' Descender 24" 18-Speed Mountain Bike

The Ozone 500 Descender is a 24-inch kids' mountain bike sold at Academy Sports + Outdoors. It pairs a steel frame with a front suspension fork and an 18-speed drivetrain, so it handles dirt paths and neighborhood rides. The 24-inch wheels fit riders roughly 8 to 12 years old, not adults despite the listing's age group. It is a budget trail bike, so expect heavier weight and basic components rather than race-ready gear.

Best for
Kids roughly 8 to 12 moving up from a 20-inch bike
Riders who want gears for hills and dirt paths
Families buying a first real mountain-style bike on a budget
Pros
  • 18 speeds give a wide range for climbs and flat riding
  • Front suspension fork softens roots and curbs
  • Steel frame is durable and forgiving for rough use
  • 24-inch wheels roll over trail obstacles better than 20-inch
  • Simple, widely available parts that are cheap to replace
Cons
  • Steel frame and fork make it heavy for a child
  • Basic suspension and drivetrain need regular tuning
  • No rear suspension, so rough descents stay jarring
  • Weight and adult sizing claim can mislead buyers

Questions and answers

Is the Descender 24 good for a beginner?
Yes. The 18-speed gearing and front suspension make dirt paths and hills manageable for a first mountain bike. The trade-off is weight, so a smaller or less confident rider may prefer a lighter bike.
What age or height fits a 24-inch bike?
Most 24-inch kids' bikes suit riders about 4'2" to 4'8", roughly ages 8 to 12. Have the child stand over the frame with both feet flat; there should be an inch or two of clearance.
How does it compare with a 20-inch kids' bike?
The 24-inch wheels roll over bumps and roots more easily and the 18 speeds cover bigger hills. It is also larger and heavier, so it is a step up for a growing rider, not a first bike for a small child.
Does it come with everything needed to ride?
It is sold as a complete bike, but budget models often need minor assembly and a derailleur and brake check before the first ride. Confirm the box contents and assembly requirements with the store.
When is the best time to buy it?
Kids' bikes usually see the deepest discounts in late summer and around Black Friday. Check the price history on this page to see whether the current price is near its low.
