Our take on the Ozone 500 Exhilarate 27.5-inch Mountain Bike

The Ozone 500 Exhilarate is a 27.5-inch full-suspension mountain bike sold at Academy Sports + Outdoors. It pairs a steel frame and steel dual suspension with 18 speeds and V brakes, and weighs 39.6 lb. At $199.99 as of November 4, 2026, it is the only new price listed, so there is no recent range to compare against. It is a budget entry point into full suspension, not a trail bike for hard riding.

Pros
  • Full dual suspension at a very low price
  • 18 speeds give a wide gear range for climbs
  • 27.5-inch wheels roll over roots and ruts better than 26-inch
  • Steel frame and 275 lb load capacity suit heavier riders
  • Lightweight alloy rims
  • Matte paint finish looks better than the price suggests
Cons
  • Steel frame and fork make it heavy at 39.6 lb
  • V brakes are weaker than disc brakes, especially in wet conditions
  • Budget full suspension adds weight more than it adds control
  • Steel frame and fork can rust if scratched and left wet
  • Assembly and tuning are often needed out of the box

Questions and answers

Is the Ozone 500 Exhilarate worth it?
At $199.99 at Academy Sports + Outdoors as of November 4, 2026, it is a reasonable first mountain bike for light trails. Expect to spend time adjusting brakes and gears, and do not expect it to hold up to hard downhill riding.
Is full suspension on a $200 bike actually useful?
It softens bumps on gravel paths and mild trails, but the steel suspension is basic and adds weight. For smooth pavement or serious climbing, a lighter hardtail at the same price often rides better.
What rider height does it fit?
Ozone 500 lists it for riders over 66 inches tall, roughly 5 feet 6 inches and up. Shorter riders will struggle to stand over the frame comfortably.
Are V brakes good enough for mountain biking?
They stop fine in dry conditions on gentle trails. In mud or rain they lose power compared with disc brakes, so ride within their limits and keep the pads clean.
How much does it weigh and what is the load limit?
It weighs 39.6 lb, which is heavy for a mountain bike. The listed load capacity is 275 lb, including the rider.
When is it cheapest?
The only new price listed is $199.99 at Academy Sports + Outdoors as of November 4, 2026. Academy discounts bikes around spring sales and end-of-season clearance, so watch those windows.
Where is the Ozone 500 Exhilarate 27.5-inch Mountain Bike cheapest?
At Academy Sports + Outdoors, for $199.99, as of our latest check.
What do buyers say about the Ozone 500 Exhilarate 27.5-inch Mountain Bike?
Rated 3.8 out of 5 from 89 ratings.
