Our take on the QFX R-50 Retro-Style Portable AM/FM/Shortwave Radio with Bluetooth and Solar Panel

The QFX R-50 is a retro-styled portable radio with AM, FM and shortwave bands, Bluetooth streaming and a solar panel for off-grid charging. It runs on a single proprietary rechargeable battery and uses an analog tuning dial rather than a digital display. It suits listeners who want a simple, self-powered radio for the yard, camping or a power outage more than anyone chasing precise tuning or hi-fi sound.

Pros
  • Three bands: AM, FM and shortwave
  • Solar panel plus rechargeable battery for off-grid use
  • Bluetooth lets you stream from a phone
  • Compact at about 8.9 inches long and 3.23 inches wide
  • Simple analog controls, no menus to learn
Cons
  • Analog dial makes precise tuning and preset recall hard
  • No alarm clock or digital display
  • Proprietary battery, so replacements come from QFX
  • Shortwave reception on a small built-in antenna is limited
  • Mono-style portable sound, not for critical listening

Questions and answers

Is the QFX R-50 worth it?
If you want a cheap, self-charging radio for the yard, camping or emergencies, it covers AM, FM, shortwave and Bluetooth in one box. If you need precise digital tuning or strong shortwave reception, spend more on a dedicated receiver.
How does the solar panel work?
The panel trickle-charges the internal proprietary battery in direct sunlight. Expect slow charging, so treat solar as a backup to wall charging rather than a fast top-up.
Does it have a digital display or presets?
No. Tuning is analog with a dial, and there is no digital display, alarm or preset memory. You find stations by ear.
What's in the box?
The radio, its proprietary rechargeable battery and a charging cable. Check the listing for the exact cable type before you buy.
Can I use it with headphones?
The radio has a headphone output for private listening. Sound through the built-in speaker is basic portable-radio quality.
When is it cheapest?
Small radios like this usually dip during back-to-school and holiday sales. Watch the price history here and buy when it falls below its recent range.
