Is the Ramelson Micro Carving Gouge Set good for beginners?

Yes. The short handles and small blades are easy to control, and the four profiles cover common detail cuts. It is not meant for heavy stock removal.

What tools are in the set?

You get a gouge, a veiner, a bent parting tool and a bent chisel. Each has a 1-3/4 in blade and a 5-1/2 in hardwood handle.

Is $84.99 a good price for this set?

It is the best new price among the two stores listing it as of November 5, 2026, so there is little cheaper new stock to find. Used or auction listings may undercut it.

Are the blades ready to carve out of the box?

Ramelson ships these sharpened, but most carvers hone new edges before first use. A strop and fine sharpening stone will keep them cutting cleanly.

The set is made in the USA, with tool steel blades and hardwood handles.

Can I use these on hardwood?

They work on softer hardwoods like basswood and butternut. Dense woods like oak or maple need larger, heavier gouges.
