Our take on the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 1GB

The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 1GB is a credit-card-sized single-board computer with a quad-core Broadcom BCM2711 at 1.5GHz, 1GB of DDR4 RAM, dual micro HDMI outputs up to 4K, true gigabit Ethernet, USB 3.0 and Bluetooth 5.0. It is the entry configuration of the Pi 4 line, so it runs the same software and HATs as the 2GB, 4GB and 8GB versions but with the least headroom. The 1GB model is the cheapest way into Pi 4 hardware, though it has been largely superseded in value by the 2GB board.

Pros
  • True gigabit Ethernet and USB 3.0, a big step over the Pi 3
  • Dual micro HDMI supports two 4K displays
  • Full 40-pin GPIO, backward compatible with older HATs
  • Quad-core 1.5GHz CPU is roughly 2-3x faster than the Pi 3B+
  • Bluetooth 5.0 and dual-band Wi-Fi built in
Cons
  • 1GB RAM limits desktop use and heavy browser tabs
  • Runs warmer than earlier models and needs a case with airflow or a fan
  • Needs a 5V/3A USB-C supply; weak chargers cause throttling
  • No eMMC or M.2 storage; microSD only
  • 2GB model costs little more and is far more usable

What reviewers say

Owners and reviewers rate the Pi 4 highly for its jump in CPU, USB 3.0 and gigabit Ethernet, but the 1GB version is widely seen as the one to skip unless the workload is headless. Most recommend the 2GB or 4GB board for desktop or multitasking.

Pros
  • Fast boot and snappy performance for server tasks
  • Reliable gigabit networking for NAS and router projects
  • Strong community support and documentation
  • Good 4K video output for a board this size
Cons
  • 1GB fills up quickly with a desktop and browser
  • Thermal throttling without a heatsink or fan
  • USB-C power requirements trip up some users
  • microSD speed caps real-world storage performance

Questions and answers

Is the 1GB model worth buying?
For headless jobs like Pi-hole, Home Assistant or a small file server, yes. For a desktop or anything with a browser, spend a little more on the 2GB or 4GB board.
How does it compare with the Raspberry Pi 3B+?
It is much faster: a 1.5GHz Cortex-A72 quad-core, USB 3.0, true gigabit Ethernet and dual HDMI. The 3B+ has only 1GB RAM too, so the Pi 4 1GB is the better buy at a similar price.
What power supply does it need?
A 5V/3A USB-C supply. Underpowered chargers cause throttling and undervoltage warnings, especially with USB peripherals attached.
Does it need a heatsink or fan?
Under sustained load it gets hot and throttles. A case with ventilation plus a small heatsink or fan keeps clocks steady.
What is in the box?
The board only. You need to supply a USB-C power adapter, microSD card, case and cables; many kits bundle these.
When is it cheapest?
Prices on the 1GB board tend to dip when the 2GB and 4GB models are promoted or when a new Pi generation launches. Compare across stores before buying.
