Our take on the Rotosound Nexus Black Coated Bass Guitar Strings

The Rotosound Nexus is a four-string electric bass set in .040–.100 gauge, with a steel core and roundwound Type 52 alloy winding under a black polymer coating. The coating is the point: it aims to keep the bright roundwound tone and feel while slowing the dirt and corrosion that kill plain strings. At $27.60 at gear4music.com as of November 7, 2026, it sits at the low end of what this set has cost recently, with five stores listing it new.

Best forBassists who want roundwound brightness that lasts longerPlayers with sweaty hands or gigs in smoky, humid roomsAnyone who likes the look of black strings on a dark bassFour-string players in standard .040–.100 territory
Pros
  • Polymer coating resists sweat, grime and corrosion
  • Keeps the feel and tone of a roundwound rather than a flat or half-round
  • Black finish looks sharp on dark fingerboards
  • Steel core gives a firm, familiar tension
  • Standard .040–.100 set covers most four-string basses
Cons
  • Coating can flake or wear at heavy pick and slap contact points
  • Muted top end compared with uncoated Rotosound rounds
  • Black coating hides dirt but also makes fret wear harder to spot
  • Coated sets cost more than plain nickel or steel rounds

Questions and answers

Do coated strings really last longer?
Yes, the polymer coating slows the sweat and grime buildup that dulls plain strings. Most players get noticeably more gigs out of a set, though heavy pick use can wear the coating.
How do these compare with Rotosound Swing Bass 66?
Swing Bass 66 is uncoated stainless steel and brighter out of the pack. Nexus trades a little top-end sparkle for a longer-lasting tone and a smoother feel.
Will the black coating come off on my fingers?
No, the coating is bonded to the winding and does not rub off on hands. It can wear thin over time where a pick strikes the string.
What bass do these fit?
They are a standard long-scale four-string set in .040–.100, so they fit most 34-inch scale basses. Check your bass's scale length before buying.
Is $27.60 a good price?
It is at the low end of the recent range for this set, with five stores listing it new. That makes it a fair time to buy if you already want coated strings.
Where is the Rotosound Nexus Black Coated Bass Guitar Strings cheapest?
At gear4music.com, for $27.60, 34% under what the other stores charge, as of our latest check.
