Our take on the Scepter Under Seat Portable Fuel Tank

The Scepter Under Seat Portable Fuel Tank is a 6-gallon rectangular gas tank sized to slide into boat under-seat storage. It is molded from seamless, UV-stabilized HDPE with a low-permeation body and a two-way vented cap, plus a sight gauge so you can check the level without opening it. It has no flame arrester and a non-flexible spout. At $55 at eBay as of November 3, 2026, it sits at the low end of what the seven stores listing it new charge.

Best forSmall boat owners with under-seat tank lockersReplacing a cracked or leaking portable outboard tankBuyers who want a simple vented cap and sight gaugeFreshwater and light-duty use where a flame arrester is not required
Pros
  • 6-gallon capacity fits many under-seat boat lockers
  • Seamless one-piece HDPE resists rust, corrosion and UV
  • Low-permeation design cuts fuel evaporation and odor
  • Two-way vented cap is simple to operate
  • Sight gauge shows fuel level at a glance
  • Rectangular shape stacks and stows better than round tanks
Cons
  • No flame arrester, which some marine rules and inspectors expect
  • Spout is not flexible, so filling awkward filler necks takes care
  • No fuel gauge sender or hose fittings included
  • Venting must be managed by hand, and a left-open cap can weep
  • 3.9 of 5 from 209 ratings suggests a noticeable share of unhappy owners

Questions and answers

Is the Scepter under-seat tank worth it?
For a basic 6-gallon boat tank at $55 at eBay as of November 3, 2026, it is a reasonable value. You get a seamless HDPE body, a vented cap and a sight gauge. Check whether your boat or local rules require a flame arrester before buying.
Does it have a flame arrester?
No. The listing specifies no flame arrester, so it may not suit boats or inspections that require one. Confirm your engine and marina rules first.
Will it fit under my boat seat?
It measures 19.3 by 12.2 by 10.2 inches, so measure your locker before ordering. The rectangular shape fits many under-seat compartments, but hatches and fill routes vary by boat.
What is included in the box?
Expect the tank and its two-way vented cap. The spout is not flexible, and no hose, fittings or fuel gauge sender are listed, so plan on buying those separately if needed.
How do I stop the cap from leaking?
Seat the two-way cap firmly and close the vent when the tank is not in use. Do not overfill, and let fuel settle before tilting the tank, since a loose cap is the most common leak complaint.
When is it cheapest?
The best new price seen was $55 at eBay as of November 3, 2026, across seven stores. Marine tanks often dip outside boating season, so compare the other stores before buying in spring.
Where is the Scepter Under Seat Portable Fuel Tank cheapest?
At eBay, for $55.00, 27% under what the other stores charge, as of our latest check.
