Our take on the Slumber Solutions Respond 12" NRGel Memory Foam Mattress, Mattress-In-A-Box, Cal King

The Slumber Solutions Respond is a 12-inch gel memory foam mattress sold compressed in a box, here in California King (84 x 72 x 12 in, 98 lb). It layers NRGel memory foam over comfort foam and a base foam core, with a medium feel aimed at back and combination sleepers. The gel infusion is meant to pull heat away from the body, the main complaint about plain memory foam. It ships rolled and expands over roughly a day; no box spring is required.

Questions and answers

Is the Slumber Solutions Respond 12" worth it?
For a budget all-foam bed in California King, it delivers a medium gel memory foam feel and good motion isolation at a low price. If you need firm support or strong edges, a hybrid is a better fit.
How long does it take to expand out of the box?
Most of the expansion happens within a few hours, and the mattress reaches full 12-inch height in about 24 to 48 hours. Sleep on it sooner if needed, but give it a day to fully loft.
Does the gel foam actually sleep cool?
NRGel foam runs cooler than traditional memory foam, but it is still foam and can trap heat. Hot sleepers should pair it with a breathable protector and a firm foundation.
What foundation does it need?
It works on a platform bed, slatted frame, adjustable base or box spring. Slats should be close together to support the foam base.
Is California King the right size?
California King is 84 x 72 inches: longer and narrower than a standard King. Choose it if you are tall or the room is long rather than wide.
When is the price lowest?
Foam mattress-in-a-box prices typically dip around major holiday sales and during mattress clearance events. Check the price history before buying.
