Our take on the Sofirn HS40 Rechargeable Headlamp SST40

The Sofirn HS40 is a rechargeable right-angle headlamp built around a single Luminus SST40 LED, rated for up to 175 m of beam throw and IPX8 water resistance to 2 m. It runs on one 18650 cell, charges over USB, and weighs 65 g without the battery, with a side e-switch and a T-shaped head mount. Its beam is adjustable in either stepless ramping or stepped modes, and the 6061 aluminum body is built to shrug off drops. It is a mid-priced, high-output headlamp aimed at people who want one light for work, camping and repairs.

Questions and answers

Is the Sofirn HS40 worth it?
Yes for buyers who want a bright, rechargeable 18650 headlamp with real throw at a modest price. If you mostly need a warm, floody beam for reading or close work, a different emitter may suit you better.
Does it come with a battery?
Bundles vary: some include an 18650 cell and some are body-only. Check the listing contents before ordering, since the light needs a button-top 18650 to run.
How long does the battery last?
Runtime depends heavily on the cell and mode. Expect a few hours on high and much longer on low or ramping settings; a spare 18650 extends a trip.
Is it waterproof enough for rain and swimming?
It is rated IPX8 to 2 m, so rain and splashes are fine. Do not dive with it, and make sure the charging port cover is sealed.
How does it compare with the Sofirn SP40?
The HS40 uses the SST40 LED for more throw and a brighter turbo than the SP40's older emitter. Both are 18650 right-angle lights with similar body layouts.
When is the price lowest?
Sofirn lights typically drop during sales events and bundle promotions. Watch the price history on this page rather than buying at the first listed price.
What do buyers say about the Sofirn HS40 Rechargeable Headlamp SST40?
Rated 4.8 out of 5 from 355 ratings.
