Our take on the Sony 55" Class BRAVIA 5 Series 4K Mini LED UHD Smart Google TV

The Sony BRAVIA 5 is a 55-inch 4K Mini LED TV with a 120 Hz panel, full HDR support, and Google TV built in. Mini LED backlighting gives it deeper blacks and higher brightness than Sony's standard LED sets, and the 120 Hz refresh rate suits sports and console gaming. It is Sony's step-down Mini LED line, below the BRAVIA 7 and 9, so it trades some peak brightness and dimming zones for a lower price. Its latest best price is $159 at Distritech as of November 3, far below what a 55-inch Mini LED Sony normally sells for, so check that listing carefully before buying.

Pros
  • Mini LED backlight delivers strong contrast and bright highlights for HDR
  • 120 Hz panel with HDMI 2.1 features suits PS5 and Xbox Series X
  • Google TV interface with Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Hulu and YouTube built in
  • Sony's processing handles motion and upscaling of lower-resolution content well
  • Wide connectivity: four HDMI, USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
Cons
  • Fewer dimming zones and lower peak brightness than the BRAVIA 7 or 9
  • Only 55 inches here; larger sizes cost considerably more
  • Google TV can feel busy and pushes recommendations
  • Built-in speakers are ordinary; a soundbar is worth budgeting for
  • The $159 listing is far below typical pricing for this set, so verify the seller and warranty

Questions and answers

Is the Sony BRAVIA 5 worth buying?
Yes if you want a 55-inch Mini LED set with 120 Hz gaming support and Sony processing at a mid-range price. If you need the brightest picture or the most dimming zones, the BRAVIA 7 is the better step up.
How does it compare with the BRAVIA 7?
The BRAVIA 7 has more dimming zones and higher peak brightness, so HDR highlights pop more. The BRAVIA 5 keeps the same 4K 120 Hz foundation and Google TV platform for less money.
Is it good for PS5 gaming?
Yes. The 120 Hz panel and HDMI 2.1 inputs support 4K at 120 fps and variable refresh rate, and Sony's game menu lets you tune picture settings per input.
What is in the box?
The TV, a stand, a remote, batteries and a power cable. HDMI cables are not included, so plan to supply your own.
When is it cheapest?
Mini LED TVs like this drop most around Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the Super Bowl sales window. The $159 at Distritech as of November 3 is far below typical pricing, so confirm the seller is authorized before ordering.
Does it support Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos?
Yes, it supports Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos passthrough, though the built-in speakers are limited. A soundbar or AV receiver gets more from Atmos content.
What do buyers say about the Sony 55" Class BRAVIA 5 Series 4K Mini LED UHD Smart Google TV?
Rated 4.4 out of 5 from 227 ratings.
