The Sony HT-S40R is a 5.1-channel soundbar system with a 600W total output: a 900mm-wide bar, a large 7.8 kg wired subwoofer, and two rear speakers fed by a small wireless amp box. It adds true surround channels and HDMI ARC at a price well below most 5.1 packages. At $248 at Walmart as of November 3, 2026, it sits at the low end of its recent range, with 7 stores listing it new.

Lowest price we've seen: $248.00 on Nov 4 at Walmart. Tracked across 8 stores since Nov 4.
Rated 4.4 out of 5 from 784 ratings, owners generally find it an easy, loud upgrade over TV speakers with convincing rear-channel effects for the money. Complaints center on bass that can sound boomy and the wired subwoofer limiting placement.
