Is the Sony ST-JX35 worth buying?

Worth it if you already have an amp or receiver and want a stable FM tuner cheaply. Skip it if you need Bluetooth, DAB or a self-contained radio.

Does it have a built-in amplifier or speakers?

No. It is a tuner only and outputs a line-level signal (about 550 mV on FM), so it needs an amplifier, receiver or powered speakers.

What antenna does it need?

FM works best with a dipole or outdoor antenna on the 75-ohm input. MW and LW need a loop or long-wire antenna for usable reception indoors.

Can it receive DAB or HD Radio?

No. It tunes analog FM, MW and LW only; there is no RDS, DAB or HD Radio.

Used units typically ship with just the tuner and power cord. Check the listing for the FM antenna and manual, since these are often missing.

Prices are lowest on used marketplaces and at estate or garage sales, and units without a tested display or antenna sell for less. Condition matters more than timing for this model.

Our take on the Sony ST-JX35 Quartz Synthesized AM/FM Stereo Digital Tuner

The Sony ST-JX35 is a standalone AM/FM stereo tuner from Sony's early 1980s component line, built around a quartz-synthesized digital tuning circuit instead of an analog dial. It covers FM (87.5–108 MHz), MW (522–1602 kHz) and LW (153–344 kHz), with a rated FM signal-to-noise ratio of 71 dB and a 550 mV output. It is a tuner only: it has no amplifier or speakers, so it needs a receiver, integrated amp or powered speakers to make sound. It is a vintage, discontinued unit, so it sells used rather than new and its price depends on condition and whether the seller includes the original power cord and antenna.
