Our take on the Soonaway S9 Electric Bike for Adults

The Soonaway S9 is a folding-style adult electric mountain bike with a steel frame, front suspension, 16-inch wheels and 4-inch fat tires. It pairs a 5-speed drivetrain with electric assist, aimed at riders who want a compact, go-anywhere e-bike for commuting, trails and rough pavement. The fat tires and front fork soak up bumps that small wheels otherwise transmit, but the steel frame and 16-inch wheels make it heavy and less efficient than a full-size e-bike.

Best forRiders who want a compact fat-tire e-bikeShort commutes and errands on mixed surfacesBeach, gravel and light trail ridingAdults who prefer a low-standover, easy-to-store bike
Pros
  • 4-inch fat tires grip sand, gravel and snow better than narrow tires
  • Front suspension softens potholes and curbs
  • 5-speed gearing lets you pedal efficiently at speed
  • Steel frame is durable and absorbs road buzz
  • 16-inch wheels keep the bike compact and easy to store
Cons
  • Steel frame plus fat tires makes it heavy to lift and carry
  • 16-inch wheels roll over obstacles worse than 26-inch or 700c wheels
  • Front-only suspension leaves the rear stiff on rough ground
  • Small wheels and fat tires can feel twitchy at higher speeds
  • No rear suspension or cargo mounts listed

Questions and answers

Is the Soonaway S9 good for commuting?
It works for short commutes on mixed pavement and gravel, thanks to the fat tires and front suspension. The heavy steel frame and small wheels make longer or faster rides less comfortable than a full-size e-bike.
How fast does the Soonaway S9 go?
The listing does not state top speed or motor wattage, so check the motor rating before buying. Most adult e-bikes in this class are limited to 20 mph under US rules.
Can the Soonaway S9 handle sand and snow?
The 4-inch fat tires are the main reason to choose it, and they give better float on sand, snow and loose gravel than standard tires. Traction still depends on tire pressure and tread.
Is the Soonaway S9 too heavy to carry?
A steel frame with 16-inch fat tires is heavy, so expect to need two hands and some effort to lift it into a car or up stairs. It is better suited to ground-level storage.
What size rider fits the Soonaway S9?
The 16-inch frame and 16-inch wheels suit shorter to average-height adults. Taller riders may feel cramped, so check the standover height before ordering.
When is the Soonaway S9 cheapest?
E-bike prices often dip during spring sales and end-of-season clearance. Compare current store prices and the price history before buying.
