Our take on the Steadfast

Steadfast is the fourth book in Jack Campbell's Lost Fleet: Beyond the Frontier military science-fiction series, following Admiral John "Black Jack" Geary and the fleet on its return from alien space. It continues the series' focus on fleet politics, strained alliances, and space combat rather than starting a new story. The best new price is $1.48 at Alibris as of November 7, 2026, a low point against the roughly $8–$10 list price for the paperback.

Best forReaders already into the Lost Fleet seriesFans of military science fiction with fleet tacticsBuyers filling a gap in a Jack Campbell collectionShoppers wanting a cheap paperback entry point
Pros
  • Continues the Geary storyline from the earlier Beyond the Frontier books
  • Fleet-action and political tension in the established Campbell style
  • Paperback is widely available and cheap on the used and new market
  • Part of a long, consistent series for binge readers
Cons
  • Not a standalone; it picks up mid-series and assumes prior books
  • Series fatigue sets in for some readers by the fourth Beyond the Frontier entry
  • Paperback only, with no newer edition in this listing

What reviewers say

Series readers generally treat Steadfast as a solid, if familiar, continuation of the Lost Fleet: Beyond the Frontier arc, valued for fleet action and Geary's leadership. The common complaint is that it reads as a bridge book rather than a self-contained story.
