Our take on the StewMac Gauged Nut Slotting File Set for Electric Guitar, For Light Strings - Set of 6

The StewMac Gauged Nut Slotting File Set is a six-piece set of files sized for cutting and widening nut slots on electric guitars strung with light strings. Each file is gauged to a fixed width and has a round bottom, so slots come out curved to match the string rather than flat-bottomed. It is a luthier and repair-bench tool, not a general setup accessory. The set is rated 4.8 out of 5 from 166 ratings, and no current price was provided for this page.

Questions and answers

Is this set worth it for a hobbyist?
If you cut or replace nuts more than once, yes. The gauged widths remove most of the guesswork. For a single nut change, a tech may be cheaper.
Will it work for heavier string gauges?
No. This set is sized for light strings. StewMac sells separate gauged sets for medium and heavier gauges, so match the set to your string gauge.
What is the difference between gauged and non-gauged nut files?
Gauged files have a fixed width matched to a string size, so the slot comes out at that width. Non-gauged files cut a slot you widen and measure yourself.
Do these files cut round-bottom slots?
Yes. The round-bottom shape seats the string in a curve rather than a flat slot, which is the standard for nut work.
What is in the box?
Six gauged nut slotting files for light electric strings. No handles or case are listed, so plan on holding them directly or adding your own handles.
When is it cheapest?
StewMac runs periodic sales, and the set is also worth checking used on luthier forums. No current price was provided for this page, so compare stores before buying.
