Our take on the Supreme Equip 24"x20" Plate Compactor 6.5 HP

The Supreme Equip 24"x20" Plate Compactor is a gasoline-powered walk-behind plate compactor with a 196 cc, 6.5 HP engine and a 23.6" x 19.7" base plate. It produces 16 kN of centrifugal force at 4,200 vibrations per minute and compacts to roughly 13.8 inches deep, which puts it in the mid-size class for driveway, patio and paver base work. It is a recoil-start, single-direction machine with a 30% gradeability and a slow 28 cm/s forward travel, so it favors control over speed. Pros
  • 16 kN force and 13.8" compaction depth handle gravel and soil sub-base
  • Large 23.6" x 19.7" plate covers ground fast per pass
  • 6.5 HP 196 cc engine is a common size, so parts and service are easy to find
  • 30% gradeability suits sloped driveways and yards
  • Simple recoil start and single-direction design mean fewer things to break
Cons
  • 108 dB noise level demands hearing protection and may bother neighbors
  • Recoil start only, no electric start option
  • 28 cm/s forward speed is slow for large areas
  • No water tank listed, so it is not set up for asphalt work out of the box
  • Heavy plate compactors of this size are hard to lift into a truck alone

Questions and answers

Is this compactor strong enough for a paver base?
Yes. At 16 kN with a 13.8-inch compaction depth, it suits gravel and crushed-stone sub-base for patios and driveways. For deep lifts, compact in 4 to 6 inch layers rather than one thick pass.
How loud is it?
The listed noise level is 108 dB, which is loud enough to require hearing protection within a few feet. Plan work hours around neighbors.
Does it come with a water tank for asphalt?
No water tank is listed in the specs. If you need to compact asphalt, you would have to add a sprinkler setup or choose a model with an integrated tank.
What size area can it cover?
The plate is about 23.6 by 19.7 inches, and forward speed is 28 cm per second. Expect roughly a few hundred square feet per hour on flat ground, less on slopes or with multiple passes.
When is the best time to buy?
Plate compactors tend to be discounted in late fall and winter, outside the spring and summer landscaping season. Check the price history on this page and compare across stores before buying.
