Questions and answers

Is the Surly Preamble good for commuting?

Yes. It has rack and fender mounts, a durable chromoly frame and 35 mm tires that roll well on pavement. The 9-speed drivetrain is simple to maintain.

Can the Preamble handle gravel?

It handles light gravel and degraded surfaces. The 35 mm Kenda tires and rigid steel fork are fine for packed dirt and paths, but not for rough or rocky trails.

What is the difference between the drop bar and flat bar Preamble?

The drop bar version puts you in a more forward, aerodynamic position for longer rides. The flat bar version gives a more upright stance and easier handling for short city trips.

How many gears does the Preamble have?

It has a 9-speed cassette with a 40t Samox crankset. That is enough for commuting and rolling terrain, but gearing is limited on long, steep climbs.

Does the Preamble come with rack and fender mounts?

Yes. The frame and fork include mounts for racks and fenders, so you can add cargo and weather protection.
