Is the TFA ScanTemp 330 accurate enough for cooking?

For surface readings on pans, oil, griddles and food it is fine, with 0.1-degree resolution and a fast response. It reads surface temperature only, so it will not tell you the internal temperature of a roast.

Can it measure body temperature?

No. It is an industrial-style infrared surface thermometer with fixed emissivity, not a medical ear or forehead thermometer. Use a clinical thermometer for people.

Why do readings on shiny metal look wrong?

The emissivity is fixed at 0.95, which matches most food, plastic, wood and painted surfaces. Shiny or polished metal reflects heat and reads low, so tape a matte patch on the surface or use a contact probe instead.

The thermometer, one 9-volt battery and an instruction manual. No case or probe is included.

How far away can I measure?

The listing does not state a distance-to-spot ratio, so keep the laser dot on the target and measure from close range for the most reliable reading. The laser only marks the aim point; it is not a measurement beam.
