Our take on the The North Face Kids Hike Packable Shell Jacket

The North Face Kids Hike Packable Shell Jacket is a waterproof, seam-sealed polyester rain shell for boys and kids, with a hood, a full zip and core vents. It packs down small enough to stash in a daypack, which makes it a practical layer for fall hikes and wet school runs. At $84 at The North Face as of November 3, 2026, it sits at the top of its recent range rather than at a discount.

Questions and answers

Is the Kids Hike Packable Shell Jacket worth $84?
It is a solid waterproof, seam-sealed shell that packs small, but $84 is the top of its recent range. If you need it now, it works; if you can wait, watch for a drop below $84.
Is it actually waterproof?
Yes. The listing specifies waterproof polyester with sealed seams and a hood, so it handles rain. It is not insulated, so pair it with a fleece in cold weather.
How packable is it?
It is designed to pack into a small bundle for a daypack or school bag. It will not compress as small as a dedicated ultralight shell, but it is easy to carry.
What sizes and fit does it come in?
It is listed in boys' and kids' sizing with a regular, relaxed fit. The relaxed cut leaves room for layers, so smaller kids may want to size down.
Can it be machine washed?
Yes, it is machine washable. Use a mild detergent and skip fabric softener to keep the water-repellent finish working.
When is it cheapest?
The best new price is $84 at The North Face as of November 3, 2026, with three stores selling it new. Kids' outerwear usually drops during seasonal sales, so compare stores before buying.
