Our take on the Traxxas Maxx Slash 4X4 Brushless Short Course Truck

The Traxxas Maxx Slash 4X4 is a 1:8-scale, ready-to-race short course truck built on the Maxx platform. It runs a 2000 kV brushless motor through a waterproof VXL-6s ESC and a shaft-driven 4WD system, and it accepts 4s or 6s LiPo packs. The TQi 2.4 GHz radio comes in the box, but batteries and charger do not. It is a heavy-duty basher and club racer aimed at experienced drivers, not beginners.

Pros
  • 2000 kV brushless motor and VXL-6s ESC handle 4s and 6s LiPo
  • Shaft-driven 4WD puts power down on loose dirt and grass
  • Waterproof electronics suit wet grass, puddles and mud
  • Ready-to-race with TQi 2.4 GHz radio included
  • 1:8 scale gives more ground clearance and stability than 1:10 short course trucks
Cons
  • No battery or charger included, so budget for a 4s or 6s LiPo and a suitable charger
  • 6s power is a lot for new drivers and can break parts in crashes
  • Large 1:8 body and 26.5-inch length need space to run and store
  • Skill level 4 and 168-month age rating put it out of reach for kids

Questions and answers

Is the Maxx Slash worth it over a 1:10 short course truck?
If you want 6s power and rough-terrain durability, yes. The 1:8 platform is bigger and tougher than most 1:10 short course trucks, but it costs more and needs more running space.
What battery do I need?
It runs on 4s or 6s LiPo, and a 6700 mAh 4-cell pack is a common match. A jumper plug is included for 4s use. No battery or charger comes in the box.
Can it run on 4s instead of 6s?
Yes. Use the included jumper plug for 4s. It is slower than 6s but easier on parts and electronics, and a good starting point.
Is it waterproof?
The VXL-6s ESC is waterproof, so it handles wet grass, puddles and mud. Dry and clean it afterward, and don't submerge it.
What's in the box?
The truck, TQi 2.4 GHz radio, jumper plug for 4s use and maintenance tools. Battery and charger are sold separately.
Is it good for a beginner?
Not really. Traxxas rates it skill level 4, and 6s power punishes mistakes. A 1:10 2WD or 4WD truck is a safer first buy.
