Our take on the Troy-Bilt Bronco 42 547cc Riding Lawn Mower 13A878BSA23

The Troy-Bilt Bronco 42 is a gas lawn tractor with a 547cc, 19 HP engine, a 42-inch deck and a CVT transmission with variable speed. It starts with a key, has an 18-inch turn radius and five cutting heights from 1.5 to 3.75 inches, and it side-discharges or bags. Mulching needs a separate kit. At $2,199 at Home Depot as of November 4, 2026, it sits at the top of its recent price range, so it is not a bargain right now.

  • Five cutting heights from 1.5 to 3.75 inches
  • 18-inch turn radius is tight for a lawn tractor
Cons
  • Mulching requires a separately sold kit
  • No cruise control, which is tiring on long straight runs
  • 3.2 out of 5 from 142 ratings suggests mixed owner satisfaction
  • At $2,199 it is priced at the high end of its recent range

Questions and answers

Is the Troy-Bilt Bronco 42 worth $2,199?
At $2,199 at Home Depot as of November 4, 2026, it is at the top of its recent price range. It is a reasonable simple tractor, but wait for a lower price or compare against other 42-inch tractors before paying full price.
Does it mulch?
Not out of the box. It side-discharges and can bag, but mulching needs a separate mulch kit.
How big a lawn will it handle?
The 42-inch deck and 19 HP engine suit roughly half an acre to an acre of mostly flat ground. Steep slopes are not its strength.
Does it have cruise control?
No. The CVT gives variable speed, but there is no cruise control, so long straight passes mean holding the pedal.
What comes in the box?
The tractor, its 12V battery and the side-discharge chute. The bagger and mulch kit are sold separately.
When is it cheapest?
Lawn tractors usually drop in late fall and winter and around spring sales events. Track its price history and buy below the current $2,199.
