Our take on the TUMI Expandable Carry-On

The TUMI Expandable Carry-On is a 22-inch four-wheel spinner in solid black ballistic nylon, built to fit most major US airline carry-on limits and to grow by a couple of inches when you overpack. It is aimed at frequent business travelers who want a hard-wearing, repairable bag rather than a cheap one. The best new price is $597 at TUMI as of November 5, 2026, and only one store lists it new, so there is no discount competition to shop around for.

Questions and answers

Is the TUMI Expandable Carry-On worth $597?
If you fly often and want one bag to last a decade, the build quality and repair support justify it. If you travel a few times a year, a cheaper hardside does the same job.
Does it fit in overhead bins?
At 22 inches it fits most US domestic carry-on limits, including major airlines' sizers. Expanded, it gets deeper and may not fit stricter international carriers.
How much extra room does the expansion add?
The expandable zipper adds roughly 2 inches of depth, enough for a few days of extra clothing or souvenirs. It is not a substitute for a checked bag.
Is it hard or soft sided?
It is soft sided, in TUMI's ballistic nylon, so it flexes into tight bins and has exterior pockets. It offers less crush protection than a polycarbonate shell.
What wheels does it have?
It has four spinner wheels, so it rolls upright and can be pushed alongside you. The wheels are replaceable through TUMI service.
When is it cheapest?
TUMI runs seasonal sales, and the price is currently $597 at TUMI as of November 5, 2026. With only one new listing, watch for TUMI's own promotions rather than store competition.
Where is the TUMI Expandable Carry-On cheapest?
At TUMI, for $597.00, as of our latest check.
