Our take on the Turin Gallatin R HX Espresso Machine with Rotary Pump, PID and Flow Control

The Turin Gallatin R HX is a semi-automatic heat-exchanger espresso machine with a rotary pump, PID temperature control and flow control, built for home baristas who want to tune shots rather than press one button. The heat exchanger lets you brew and steam at the same time, and the 67.6 fl oz tank means fewer refills during a session. Flow control adds pre-infusion and pressure profiling that most machines at this level lack. It is a hands-on machine: you grind, dose, and manage the brew yourself.

Questions and answers

Is the Turin Gallatin R HX worth it over a single-boiler machine?
If you regularly make milk drinks, yes. The heat exchanger lets you steam while brewing, so you are not waiting between shots the way you do on a single boiler. If you drink straight espresso only, a cheaper single boiler with PID may be enough.
Do I need a special grinder for this machine?
Yes. Flow control and PID only pay off with a grinder that can make fine, consistent adjustments. A budget burr grinder will limit what the machine can do.
How does the heat exchanger affect temperature?
The brew circuit runs through the steam boiler, so it runs hot. Pull a short cooling flush before each shot and the PID keeps the group stable after that.
What is flow control useful for?
It lets you start a shot at low pressure for pre-infusion, then ramp up, and taper pressure at the end. That can reduce channeling and let you pull lighter roasts with more control.
Can I plumb it in instead of using the tank?
The 67.6 fl oz tank is the standard setup. Check the specific unit's fittings before planning a plumbed installation, since tank-fed is the default configuration.
When is the best time to buy?
Espresso machines like this see discounts around major sales events and when a newer model is announced. Compare the current price against its recent range before buying.
