Our take on the U.S. Traveler Rio 2-Piece Expandable Softside Carry-on Luggage Set

The U.S. Traveler Rio is a two-piece softside carry-on set: a 20-inch expandable spinner suitcase plus a matching tote that slides over the suitcase handle. The polyester bags weigh about 6.6 pounds together, have 360-degree spinner wheels, a push-button telescopic handle and several zippered exterior pockets. At $43.19 at Kohl's as of November 6, 2026, it sits at the low end of its recent range, well under what most two-piece carry-on sets cost.

Best forBudget travelers who want a suitcase and tote in one buyShort trips and weekenders flying carry-on onlyBuyers who prefer softside bags with outside pocketsTravelers who want a tote that piggybacks on the suitcase handle
Pros
  • Two pieces for one low price
  • Expandable main compartment adds packing room
  • Tote has a piggy-bag strap that slides over the suitcase handle
  • Four 360-degree spinner wheels roll in any direction
  • Multiple exterior and interior pockets keep small items organized
  • Light empty weight leaves more of the carry-on allowance for contents
Cons
  • Polyester shell and basic wheels are built to a budget
  • Softside fabric offers little protection for fragile items
  • Telescopic handle and zippers are common failure points on cheap sets
  • Tote is small and best suited as a personal item, not a second suitcase

Questions and answers

Is the U.S. Traveler Rio set carry-on size?
The suitcase is sold as a carry-on, but the listed dimensions (about 21 by 13.5 by 7.5 inches) are close to the limits some airlines set. Check your airline's size rules before relying on it as a cabin bag.
What is included in the set?
You get the 20-inch expandable softside suitcase and a matching tote bag. The tote has a strap that slides over the suitcase's telescopic handle.
How much does the set weigh?
The listed empty weight is 2.99 kg, about 6.6 pounds. That is light for a two-piece set and leaves more of the carry-on weight allowance for your belongings.
Is $43.19 a good price?
Yes. At $43.19 at Kohl's as of November 6, 2026, the set is near the bottom of its recent price range and costs less than most single carry-on suitcases.
Does the suitcase expand?
Yes. The main compartment has an expansion zipper that adds a few inches of depth for extra packing space.
How durable is it?
It is a budget set, and reviews are mixed on longevity. The wheels and telescopic handle are the parts owners most often report failing, so it suits occasional trips better than frequent flying.
