Is the WD Red Pro 12TB worth it over a cheaper 12TB desktop drive?

For a NAS, yes. Red Pro drives are rated for continuous operation and vibration in multi-bay enclosures, which desktop drives are not. If the drive only holds backups that run occasionally, a cheaper drive can do the job.

Will this drive work in my Synology or QNAP NAS?

It uses a standard SATA 6Gb/s interface and 3.5-inch form factor, so it fits most Synology, QNAP and TerraMaster bays. Check your NAS vendor's compatibility list for the exact model before buying.

Is 5400 RPM fast enough for a NAS?

For file storage, media streaming and backups, yes. Sequential reads reach around 500 MB/s at the interface, but random access is slower than a 7200 RPM drive, so it is a poor fit for heavy virtual machine or database workloads.

Does it come with cables or mounting screws?

Retail drives usually ship bare, without SATA cables or screws. Most NAS enclosures include their own trays and screws, so check what your unit provides.

When is the price likely to be lowest?

Large hard drives tend to dip during Black Friday and other major sales events. At $539.99 it is near the top of its recent range, so waiting for a promotion is reasonable if you are not in a hurry.
