Is the WD80EFPX worth it over a cheaper 8TB drive?

If your NAS rebuilds or writes large files often, yes. The CMR design avoids the slow write speeds that SMR drives show in RAID. If it is just cold storage, a cheaper drive may do.

Is this drive CMR or SMR?

It is CMR. WD lists the Red Plus line as CMR, which is why it is the safer pick for NAS arrays.

Will it work in my Synology or QNAP NAS?

Yes, it is a standard 3.5-inch SATA drive and mounts in most Synology, QNAP and TerraMaster bays. Check your enclosure's drive compatibility list for firmware notes.

How does it compare with the WD Red Pro 8TB?

The Red Pro spins at 7200 rpm and is faster, but it costs more and runs louder. The Red Plus is the quieter, cheaper choice for home NAS use.

When is the best time to buy it?

At $289.99 it is near its recent high. Prices on this drive tend to dip during major sales events and when larger-capacity drives are discounted.

Our take on the WD Red Plus WD80EFPX 8TB

The WD Red Plus WD80EFPX is an 8TB 3.5-inch SATA hard drive built for NAS enclosures and small servers. It spins at 5400 rpm and uses CMR recording, which keeps sustained write speeds steady in RAID rebuilds, unlike SMR drives. The best new price is $289.99 at eBay as of November 5, 2026, with three stores listing it new. That sits near the top of its recent range, so it is not a bargain moment.
