Best small upright freezers under $150

Top pick: Bangson 1.1 cu. ft. mini upright freezer in black — it's the one that hits all three of your marks: genuinely small, upright, and black. At 1.1 cu. ft. it tucks into a dorm, office or corner of a garage, and it's the best-rated of the black uprights here.

Who the others suit:

• Auseo 3 cu. ft. black upright — if you want real capacity for a kitchen or basement and can spare the floor space.
• Mini Freezer Countertop 1.1 cu. ft. — if you'd rather have a countertop unit with a dial thermostat and five temperature levels.
• TABU 3.6 cu. ft. and Winfire 2.1 cu. ft. — bigger uprights, but neither is black, so they only work if the finish is flexible.

Skip the Magic Chef and Frigidaire retro models: both run well past your budget.
