Which is better for a beginner home gym?

The Amazon Basics pair is the cheaper start at $34.64 at eBay as of November 5, 2026. The CAP pair makes more sense if you expect to outgrow 10 lb quickly, since it adjusts down to lighter loads and up to 12.5 lb per hand.

Is the CAP set worth about $60 more?

Yes if space and progression matter. One CAP pair covers five weights in 2.5 lb steps and includes a tray. If you only need one fixed weight for toning, the Amazon Basics pair does that for less.

Which is better for floor exercises like renegade rows?

The Amazon Basics pair. Its hex ends stop it rolling and the neoprene coating is gentler on floors. The CAP dumbbells have round heads and exposed metal plates.

How heavy is each dumbbell?

The CAP pair is 12.5 lb per hand, 25 lb total, adjustable in 2.5 lb increments. The Amazon Basics pair is 10 lb per hand, 20 lb total, with no adjustment.

The CAP set has a cast metal build and a chrome handle that resist wear, but the twist mechanism is one more part that can fail. Neoprene on the Amazon Basics pair can crack or peel with heavy use, though the cast iron core lasts.

Can I use either for heavy strength training?

Neither goes heavy. At 12.5 lb and 10 lb per hand they suit light to moderate work: raises, curls, lunges and toning. For pressing or rowing heavy, you need a larger adjustable set or fixed dumbbells above 20 lb.
