Which is better for wind data?

The Tempest. It updates every 3 seconds and uses ultrasonic sensing with no moving parts. The WS-2902 updates every 16 seconds and its anemometer has moving parts.

Do I need a subscription for either?

No. The Tempest includes lifetime access to data, forecasts and API integrations at no subscription fee. The WS-2902 has no subscription either.

Is the Tempest worth about $97 more?

Yes if you want fast updates, no moving parts, solar power and smart home integrations. If you mainly want a display on the wall, the WS-2902 covers that for less.

The Tempest has no moving parts, so less to wear out, but some buyers report battery failures. The WS-2902's tipping bucket and anemometer need cleaning and may need recalibration over time.

Can I see readings without a phone?

Only on the WS-2902, which has a color display. The Tempest has no display and relies on its app.

Which works with Home Assistant?

The Tempest. Buyers report clean data and easy Home Assistant integration. The WS-2902 lists Wi-Fi with email and text alerts but no Home Assistant integration.
