Is the Echo Show 8 (2nd Gen) worth buying in 2026?

Only at a low price. It is a capable kitchen display, but the 3rd Gen adds a better camera and faster performance. At $159.99 it is expensive for a 2nd Gen unit.

What is the difference between the 2nd Gen and 3rd Gen Echo Show 8?

The 3rd Gen has a 13MP camera with a wider field of view, faster processing, and better sound. The 2nd Gen still handles Alexa, video and smart home control well.

Does the Echo Show 8 have a battery?

No. It must stay plugged into a wall outlet, so plan on a spot near a power socket.

Can I make video calls on the Echo Show 8?

Yes, through Alexa calling and Skype. It does not run Zoom or Google Meet natively.

Does it work as a smart home hub?

Yes. The built-in Zigbee radio lets it control compatible lights, plugs and sensors without a separate hub.

Our take on the Amazon Echo Show 8 (2nd Gen)

The Echo Show 8 (2nd Gen) is Amazon's mid-size smart display: an 8-inch HD touchscreen with Alexa, a 13MP camera that auto-frames you on video calls, and a built-in Zigbee hub for smart home devices. It sits between the smaller Show 5 and the larger Show 10, and its screen makes it better for recipes, video and calls than a speaker-only Echo. The best new price is $159.99 at RELYmedia as of November 7, 2026, which is high for this model — it launched at $129.99 and has often sold well below that.
