Is the iPad 9th Gen still worth buying?

Yes if you want a cheap Apple tablet for browsing, video, notes and light games. It is slower and less modern than the iPad 10th Gen, but at $163.99 at Walmart as of November 4, 2026 it costs far less.

How does it compare with the iPad 10th Gen?

The 10th Gen has a larger 10.9-inch screen, USB-C, a newer chip and a flat-edge design. The 9th Gen keeps the home button, Lightning and the headphone jack, and costs much less.

For streaming, email and cloud photos, yes. If you download large games or store lots of video offline, plan on using iCloud or pick a 256GB model.

Does the Apple Pencil 1st Gen work with it?

Yes. It supports the first-generation Apple Pencil and the Smart Keyboard, not the Pencil 2 or Magic Keyboard.

A new unit includes the iPad and a Lightning-to-USB-C cable. Apple no longer includes a charging adapter, so you need your own USB-C power brick.

Entry iPads usually drop around Black Friday, back-to-school season and when a newer model launches. The current best new price is $163.99 at Walmart as of November 4, 2026.
