Our take on the Apple iPad Air 1st Generation 9.7-inch 32GB Wi-Fi Tablet

The first iPad Air is a 9.7-inch tablet with a 2048 x 1536 Retina display, Apple's A7 chip and 32GB of storage. It weighs 16.8 oz and Apple rated the battery at up to 10 hours. It is a 2013 device that no longer receives iOS updates, so it suits light, older-app use rather than current software. The best new price is $139.00 at KenDoTronics as of November 5, 2026, and only one store lists it new.

Questions and answers

Is the iPad Air 1st generation still worth buying?
Only for light use like reading, video and basic browsing. It no longer gets iOS updates, so check that the apps you need still support its iOS version before buying.
Can it run current apps?
Many current apps require a newer iOS than this iPad supports. Older versions of apps may still work if you already own them, but new installs are often blocked.
Does it support the Apple Pencil?
No. Apple Pencil support started with later iPad models, so this one works with a finger or a third-party stylus only.
How much storage does the 32GB model leave free?
iOS and built-in apps take several gigabytes, leaving roughly the mid-20s in GB for your own apps, photos and downloads.
What's in the box?
A new unit typically includes the iPad, a Lightning cable and a power adapter. Confirm the contents with the seller, since this is an old model.
When is it cheapest?
It is a discontinued model with one new listing at $139.00 at KenDoTronics as of November 5, 2026. Used units usually sell for less, so compare condition before paying new prices.
