Our take on the Apple Watch Series 8 45mm Gold Stainless Steel Case with Starlight Sport Band

The Apple Watch Series 8 is Apple's 2022 flagship smartwatch, pairing an always-on Retina display with GPS, cellular, blood oxygen sensing and ECG. This listing is the 45mm gold stainless steel case with a Starlight Sport Band, a heavier and more scratch-resistant build than the aluminum version. It runs watchOS and needs an iPhone. The Series 8 has been superseded by later models, so its price has fallen well below launch; check the current listing price against recent history before buying.

Questions and answers

Is the Series 8 still worth buying?
Yes if you want a stainless steel Apple Watch at a lower price than newer models. Newer Series watches add features like a brighter display and faster chip, so compare prices before deciding.
Does this model work with Android phones?
No. The Apple Watch requires an iPhone running a recent version of iOS to set up and use.
Do I need a cellular plan?
Only if you want calls, texts and data without your iPhone nearby. The watch works over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth without a plan, and cellular service needs a carrier add-on with a monthly fee.
Can I swim with it?
Yes. It is swimproof and rated for shallow-water swimming, though Apple does not recommend it for high-velocity water sports or diving.
What is in the box?
The watch with the Starlight Sport Band, a magnetic charging cable and documentation. A power adapter is not included.
When is it cheapest?
Older Apple Watch models usually drop around major sales events and when a new Series launches. Check the price history here before buying.
