Is Media Composer worth $599.99 a year?

If you cut scripted TV, film or documentary and exchange projects with other Avid shops, the bundled ScriptSync and PhraseFind plus support justify it. For casual or short-form editing, cheaper editors do the job.

How does it compare with Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve?

Media Composer leads on script-based workflows and large-project media management. Premiere and Resolve cost less and are friendlier for solo and short-form work, but they are less common in scripted post.

How much RAM do I need?

Avid lists 16 GB for J2K capture, 32 GB for high-resolution editing and stereoscopic 3D, 24 GB for PhraseFind AI indexing and 128 GB for 8K projects. Plan for 32 GB or more for typical HD and 4K work.

What is included in the subscription?

A one-year, one-user license with downloads for Windows and Mac, plus ScriptSync, PhraseFind, software updates and support. It is a download; no media is shipped.

Does it work on my computer?

It requires an Avid-qualified Mac or Windows machine with an SSE 4.1 CPU. Check Avid's qualified hardware list before buying, since unsupported systems can cause playback and capture problems.

Our take on the Avid Media Composer

Avid Media Composer is the professional nonlinear editor used on most scripted TV and studio films, sold here as a one-year subscription for one user on Windows or Mac. It bundles ScriptSync and PhraseFind, Avid's script-matching and spoken-word search tools, and includes updates and support for the term. The best new price is $599.99 at Professional Audio Design as of November 4, 2026, the only new listing tracked. That is near the top of what a single annual seat typically costs, so it is a commitment rather than a casual buy.
