Our take on the Bandai Namco Soul Calibur VI Deluxe Edition

Soul Calibur VI is a 3D weapon-based fighting game from Bandai Namco, and the Deluxe Edition bundles the base game with the season pass and bonus content. It runs on PlayStation 4 with online play and is sold here as a download code, not a disc. The roster brings back classic fighters alongside guest character Geralt of Rivia, and the game adds Reversal Edge and Soul Charge mechanics to the series' eight-way movement. At 4.2 out of 5 from 25 ratings, reception is solid but not unanimous.

Best forFighting game fans who want a full roster and season pass in one purchase
Players who prefer digital downloads over discs
Soul Calibur veterans returning for the story modes
Local two-player sessions with a second controller
Pros
  • Deluxe Edition includes the season pass, so extra characters come without separate buys
  • Weapon-based combat with eight-way movement rewards positioning over button mashing
  • Geralt of Rivia is a playable guest fighter with his own moveset
  • Two story modes, Libra of Soul and Soul Chronicle, add single-player content
  • Online ranked and casual play are supported
Cons
  • Deluxe content is a download code, so there is no disc to resell or lend
  • The season pass adds characters but not a large amount of new stages
  • Reversal Edge slows the pace and divides longtime players
  • Single-player modes are thin compared with modern fighting game packages
  • Online population is smaller than at launch

Questions and answers

Is the Deluxe Edition worth it over the standard game?
If you want the extra season pass characters, yes. The Deluxe Edition bundles them in, which usually costs less than buying the pass separately. If you only play a few fighters, the standard edition is enough.
What is included in the Deluxe Edition?
It includes the base game plus the season pass and bonus content such as extra creation parts. Everything is delivered as a PlayStation 4 download, so there is no disc.
Does it work on PlayStation 5?
Yes. The PlayStation 4 version plays on PS5 through backward compatibility. Online play requires a PlayStation Plus subscription.
How does it compare with Soul Calibur V?
It brings back the faster pace and a fuller roster than V, and adds Reversal Edge and Soul Charge. Most players consider it the better package of the two.
Is online play still active?
Ranked and casual matches are still available, but the player pool is smaller than at launch. Expect longer waits outside peak hours.
When is it cheapest?
Fighting game digital editions drop most during major PlayStation Store sales. Watch the price history here rather than buying at full price.
What do buyers say about the Bandai Namco Soul Calibur VI Deluxe Edition?
Rated 4.2 out of 5 from 25 ratings.
