Our take on the Baofeng G11S 5W GMRS Radio

The Baofeng G11S is a consumer GMRS handheld radio with 5W output, VOX voice activation, weather scanning and a rechargeable Li-ion battery. Baofeng's claim of up to 8 miles is realistic only across open water or flat open ground; in woods, buildings or suburbs expect a fraction of that. It is a low-cost way to get legal GMRS power for family, camping and vehicle-to-vehicle use.

Questions and answers

Is the Baofeng G11S worth it?
Yes if you want an inexpensive 5W GMRS handheld for family or trail use. If you need rugged build, better audio or longer range, spend more on a Midland or Wouxun model.
Do I need a license to use it?
Yes. GMRS operation in the US requires an FCC GMRS license, which covers your immediate family. The radio can receive without one, but transmitting legally needs the license.
What is the real range?
Expect roughly 1 to 3 miles in neighborhoods or woods and up to several miles over open water or flat open terrain. The 8-mile figure is a maximum under ideal line-of-sight conditions.
Does it work with other GMRS radios?
Yes. It uses standard GMRS channels and privacy codes, so it talks to other GMRS handhelds and mobiles, including Midland and Motorola units, on the same channel and code.
What comes in the box?
Typically the radio, a Li-ion battery pack, a charging cradle, an AC adapter, an antenna, a belt clip and a manual. Check the listing for the exact bundle.
When is it cheapest?
Baofeng radios usually drop around Black Friday, Prime Day and other big sales events. Watch the price history to see whether the current price is near its low.
What do buyers say about the Baofeng G11S 5W GMRS Radio?
Rated 4.6 out of 5 from 52 ratings.
