Our take on the Radtel RT-493 GMRS Radio

The Radtel RT-493 is a handheld GMRS two-way radio with 199 channels and a water-resistant body. It is aimed at families, campers and off-roaders who want license-covered GMRS coverage without a complex menu system. The channel count is high for a consumer GMRS handheld, which lets you store repeaters and local frequencies alongside the standard channels. It is a budget-tier radio, so expect basic build and audio quality rather than premium performance.

Questions and answers

Is the Radtel RT-493 worth it?
It is a reasonable low-cost pick if you mainly need basic GMRS talk for family trips. If you want strong audio and long-term durability, a name-brand handheld is a safer buy.
Do I need a license to use it?
Yes. GMRS in the US requires an FCC license, but there is no test, and one license covers your immediate family.
How many channels does it have?
It stores 199 channels, which is more than most consumer GMRS radios and enough for standard channels plus repeaters.
Is it waterproof?
It is water resistant, not waterproof. It handles rain and splashes, but it should not be submerged.
What comes in the box?
Expect the radio, a battery, an antenna, a charger and a belt clip. Check the listing for the exact bundle before buying.
When is it cheapest?
Budget radios like this usually drop around major sales events and holiday weekends. Watch the price history rather than buying at the first listed price.
