Our take on the Caron Latte Cakes Yarn in Coconut Cream

Caron Latte Cakes is a bulky (weight 5) acrylic-nylon blend sold in 8.8 oz cakes with 530 yards each. It is a textured, self-striping yarn aimed at shawls and accessories, so the color changes come built in and you get a lot of yardage from one cake. The best new price is $10.49 at Michaels Stores as of November 4, 2026, with two stores listing it new.

Pros
  • Self-striping, so color changes happen without joining skeins
  • 530 yards per 8.8 oz cake covers a large accessory
  • Bulky weight works up fast on larger needles and hooks
  • Acrylic-nylon blend is durable and machine washable
  • Textured hand adds visual interest to simple stitches
Cons
  • Bulky weight limits it to chunky projects, not fine garments
  • Acrylic content means limited breathability
  • Single cake may not finish a large shawl depending on gauge
  • Color repeats can pool unpredictably with some stitch counts

Questions and answers

Is Caron Latte Cakes worth it?
At $10.49 for 530 yards of self-striping bulky yarn, it is a reasonable value for shawls and accessories. Skip it if you need a lighter weight or predictable, non-pooling stripes.
What weight is Caron Latte Cakes?
It is bulky, weight category 5, with a gauge of 5 and about 5.5 mm thickness. Plan on larger needles or hooks and chunky-project patterns.
How much yarn is in one cake?
Each cake is 8.8 oz and 530 yards. That is enough for many shawls and most accessories, though a large wrap may need a second cake.
Is it machine washable?
Yes, the label says machine wash. The acrylic-nylon blend is durable, but lay flat to dry to keep the texture and shape.
Does it really stripe on its own?
Yes, it is self-striping, so the color changes are built into the yarn. Stitch count and project width affect how the stripes pool.
When is the best time to buy it?
The best new price is $10.49 at Michaels Stores as of November 4, 2026. Watch for store sales and coupons, since yarn promotions are common.
