Is a 4-inch shikibuton comfortable enough for every night?

It suits people who like a firm, low bed. Side sleepers and anyone with hip or shoulder pain often find 4 inches too thin and add a topper.

How big is the queen size?

It measures 80 inches long and 60 inches wide, the standard queen footprint, at 4 inches thick.

Can I fold it away during the day?

Yes. Shikibutons are made to be folded or rolled and stored, which is the main reason people choose one over a regular mattress.

Does it need a tatami mat underneath?

Not required, but a tatami mat or slatted base helps air circulate and keeps moisture from building up under the mattress.

Is $179.54 a good price?

Only one store lists it new at that price as of November 7, 2026, so there is no competing new price to beat. Compare it with other queen shikibutons before deciding.

How do I keep it from getting musty?

Air it in sunlight regularly and turn it, and avoid laying it directly on damp concrete or carpet without a breathable base.
