Our take on the Dynaudio Legend

The Dynaudio Legend is a two-way bass-reflex bookshelf speaker, sold as a matched pair and hand-built in Denmark. It pairs the 28mm Esotar 3 soft-dome tweeter with Hexis inner dome to a 15cm MSP woofer, crossed over at 3,500 Hz, in a compact 186 × 311 × 271 mm cabinet weighing 6.3 kg each. Sensitivity is low at 83 dB and impedance is 6 ohms, so it wants a solid amplifier. The best new price is $7,000 at AudioVision San Francisco as of November 4, 2026, with two stores listing it new.

Best forSmall rooms and near-field listeningVinyl and streaming setups with a quality ampBuyers who want Danish cabinet craftListeners who value imaging over loudness
Pros
  • Esotar 3 tweeter with Hexis dome gives smooth, detailed highs
  • Compact cabinet fits shelves, sideboards or stands
  • Natural rosewood veneer with matched grain per pair
  • Can be placed upright, on its side or upside-down
  • Hand-assembled in Denmark
Cons
  • 83 dB sensitivity needs a powerful amplifier
  • Bass reaches only to 60 Hz, so a subwoofer may be wanted
  • Rear bass port needs breathing room from the wall
  • $7,000 is a lot for a two-way bookshelf
  • Black finish listed, though the cabinet is described as rosewood

What reviewers say

Owners of the Legend line praise the Esotar tweeter's detail and the cabinet finish. The common caution is that the low sensitivity demands a strong amp and that deep bass is limited for the size.

Pros
  • Clean, extended treble
  • Solid build and veneer quality
  • Precise imaging
Cons
  • Needs a beefy amplifier
  • Limited low-end extension
  • Price relative to larger floorstanders

About the Dynaudio Legend

Items marked (available to demo) are available in our store for audition. Please give us a call or email in advance for an appointment.PRICED PER PAIR. Dynaudio Legend is the benchmark for luxury bookshelf speakers. It’s designed and handcrafted with one purpose: to help you forget that time exists. It’s been created to surprise: to raise eyebrows at such an immersive sound coming from something so little… and so perfect. It’s been engineered to entertain: to get you littering the floor with your entire vinyl collection (or hammering the bandwidth on your streamer). And it’s been built to captivate: to make you want to just gaze at its rosewood cabinet, its subtle corners and its expert Danish craftsmanship. Just like all great legends, this one will stay in your heart forever. We all deserve nice things Listening to music you love puts you in a nice, liminal space. You’re sitting in the moment, unplugged from the rest of the world. Your mind wanders – to the past, the future, the present. To no time at all. It’s a ‘hyggeligt’ place to be. If you’ve made a conscious choice to actively do nothing, you’ve made a conscious choice to do something nice for yourself; to be a bit selfish. Choose to be actively passive in front of a pair of Dynaudio Legend loudspeakers and you’ve also chosen to do it in style. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. In fact, you have our full-throated endorsement. Every pair of Dynaudio Legend is unique. Yes, they all use the same high-quality parts; they all have the same astonishingly huge, detailed and punchy sound; and they’re all the same deliciously compact size. But they don’t all look alike, and they don’t all feel alike. Each pair has had its natural rosewood veneer panels selected and matched by eye, paired with Jatoba hardwood corner pieces that fit their colour tone, and assembled by hand at Dynaudio HQ in Denmark. That means you’ll have the only pair with that grain pattern and texture in the world. It’s an unlimited limited edition – and yours is number one of one, no matter how many sets are produced. That’s pedigree But Legend is more than just a pretty fascia. Look beyond that gorgeous veneer and those sublime corner details and you’ll see the loudspeaker equivalent of a Formula 1 car. Everything – from the Esotar 3 tweeter and the powerful precision mid/bass driver, to the crossover circuitry, the WBT NextGen terminals and even the dual-flared bass port – is designed for performance. It’s literally the same stuff you’ll find in our towering flagship hi-fi speakers, and even the professional reference systems that grace the likes of AIR Studios and Abbey Road. Nothing trickled down here. It’s the same components that have helped to win BAFTAs and Oscars. If you can get your hands on either of those awards as well as a pair of Legend, you’ll find that they all fit neatly into a bookshelf. (That was an exciting day in our product-design office.) But unlike a Formula 1 car, Legend is easy to live with. We’ve gone to great pains to make sure it’s living-room friendly; we know not all our speakers are (and not everyone wants that, believe it or not). You can put these on stands as part of a system that looks like a trolley-dash in a hi-fi warehouse, of course, but they’ll be equally at home – and sound just as impressive – on a shelf or sideboard. Or hooked up to a streamer or your TV set. You can put them upside-down, or even on their sides, so they’re exactly how you want them. Go and experiment. You have our permission. Timeless Regardless of how you set it up, Legend delivers a performance that’s genuinely surprising. And we mean that: even our critically-eared Dynaudio Labs listening panel thought someone had hidden a subwoofer somewhere during their first showing. Couple that with Legend’s enthralling clarity and sweet midrange, and that analytical test-run quickly turned into an extended, it-doesn’t-matter-what-the-time-is-let’s-just-play-another-song listening marathon. Which is exactly what we hope it does for you, too.SpecificationsStatus CurrentSegment HomeSeries LegendType BookshelfSensitivity (dB @ 2.83V/1m) 83IEC Long Term Power Handling (W) 150Rated Impedance (Ohm) 6Frequency response 60Hz - 28kHzBox Principle Bass reflex rear portedCrossover 2-wayCrossover Frequency (Hz) 3500HzCrossover Topology 2nd orderTweeter 28mm Esotar 3 with HexisWoofer 1x 15cm MSPWeight kg 6.3Weight lbs 14Width mm 186Height mm 311Depth mm 271Width inches 7 1/3Height inches 12 1/4Depth inches 10 2/3Finishes Natural Rosewood

Questions and answers

Is the Dynaudio Legend worth $7,000?
It is a hand-built Danish two-way with the Esotar 3 tweeter, and $7,000 at AudioVision San Francisco as of November 4, 2026 is the best new price among two stores. Whether it is worth it depends on your room and amplifier more than the speaker alone.
What amplifier do I need for 83 dB sensitivity?
At 83 dB and 6 ohms, plan on a capable amp of roughly 100 watts or more per channel for headroom. Low-power tube amps will struggle at higher volumes.
Do I need a subwoofer with these?
Frequency response runs 60 Hz to 28 kHz, so a subwoofer helps for organ, electronic and film content. In a small room with music, many owners run them alone.
How far from the wall should they sit?
The bass port is at the rear, so leave some space behind the cabinet to avoid boomy bass. A shelf or stand placement with a few inches of clearance is a reasonable start.
Can they be placed on their sides?
Yes. AudioVision San Francisco notes they can go on stands, shelves, sideboards, upside-down or on their sides. Keep the tweeter near ear height for the best result.
What is in the box?
The price is per pair, so you get two speakers. Stands and cables are not included; confirm accessories with the store before ordering.
Where is the Dynaudio Legend cheapest?
At AudioVision San Francisco, for $7,000.00, as of our latest check.
Where can I buy the Dynaudio Legend?
2 stores we checked sell it, including AudioVision San Francisco, Resolution Audio Video NYC.
