Questions and answers

Is the Empire Gateway 1700 worth it?
For a cabin or workshop of 500 to 1,200 sq. ft., yes. It is EPA certified, takes standard 18-inch logs and has no catalytic combustor to service. In a large, poorly insulated house it will need constant reloading.
How does it compare with a catalytic stove?
It is simpler and cheaper to maintain because there is no combustor to clean or replace. The trade-off is efficiency: 70% HHV is below what good catalytic stoves reach, so it burns more wood for the same heat.
How big a space will it actually heat?
The 500 to 1,800 sq. ft. range is optimistic at the top end. Expect solid heat in a well-insulated 500 to 1,200 sq. ft. room; beyond that it becomes supplemental heat.
What log length and flue does it need?
Logs up to 18 inches and a 6-inch flue. Plan the hearth clearance and chimney to code before buying.
How long does a load burn?
Empire rates it at 6 hours. That is not an overnight burn in cold weather, so expect to reload before bed and again in the morning.
What is in the box?
The stove itself. Flue pipe, chimney, hearth pad and blower are typically sold separately, so budget for those.
