Our take on the fanxiang S101 2.5" SATA III Internal SSD

The fanxiang S101 is a 2.5-inch SATA III internal SSD sold in 256 GB, 512 GB, 2 TB and 4 TB versions. It uses the standard 6 Gbps SATA interface, so it fits any desktop or laptop with a 2.5-inch drive bay and tops out around 550 MB/s, the limit of the SATA bus. It is a budget drive, and the large 2 TB and 4 TB capacities are its main draw for storage-heavy builds. It rates 4.7 out of 5 from 53 ratings.

Best forUpgrading an older laptop or desktop from a hard driveCheap bulk storage for games, photos and backupsReviving a machine that has no M.2 slotBudget builds that need a large-capacity drive
Pros
  • Standard 2.5-inch SATA III fit, works in most laptops and desktops
  • Available up to 4 TB, more capacity than most budget SATA drives
  • Much faster than a hard drive for boot and app load times
  • No DRAM or heatsink requirements, simple drop-in install
  • Low price per gigabyte at the big capacities
Cons
  • SATA speeds cap around 550 MB/s, well below NVMe drives
  • No DRAM cache on a budget controller, so sustained writes can slow
  • Brand is less established than Samsung, Crucial or WD
  • No hardware encryption or management software of note
  • 2.5-inch drives need a bay or adapter; no M.2 version

Pros
  • Noticeable boot and load speedup over a hard drive
  • Simple install in laptops and desktops

Cons
  • Write speeds drop on large transfers
  • Less brand recognition and support than major names

Questions and answers

Is the fanxiang S101 worth it?
Yes if you need cheap SATA storage or are upgrading an old hard drive. If your machine has an M.2 slot, an NVMe drive costs similar money and is several times faster.
How fast is it compared with an NVMe SSD?
It runs on SATA III, so expect roughly 500 to 550 MB/s sequential reads. A typical NVMe drive reaches 3,000 MB/s or more, so this is a capacity play, not a speed one.
Will it fit my laptop?
It fits any laptop with a 2.5-inch SATA drive bay, which covers most models made before roughly 2018. Thin ultrabooks that use only M.2 will not take it.
Which capacity should I buy?
Pick 512 GB for a boot drive with room for apps, and 2 TB or 4 TB for game libraries, photos or backups. Larger drives also tend to hold write speed better.
What is in the box?
The drive itself. You supply the SATA cable and power connector for a desktop, and cloning software if you want to copy your old drive.
When is it cheapest?
Budget SATA SSDs like this one see their deepest discounts around Black Friday and back-to-school sales. Check the price history before buying at full price.
