Our take on the fanxiang SATA 2.5 6Gb/s Internal Solid State Drive

The fanxiang SATA 2.5 SSD is a budget 2.5-inch internal drive using the SATA 6Gb/s interface, sold in 256GB, 512GB, 2TB and 4TB capacities. It is aimed at reviving older laptops and desktops or adding cheap bulk storage where an M.2 slot is unavailable. It is a DRAM-less, SATA-limited drive, so expect roughly 500 MB/s sequential speeds rather than NVMe performance. No current price was provided, so check the live comparison for where each capacity sits against its recent range.

Best forUpgrading an older laptop or desktop with a 2.5-inch bayCheap bulk storage for games, photos and backupsBudget builds without an M.2 slotReplacing a failing mechanical hard drive
Pros
  • Works with almost any laptop or desktop that has a SATA bay
  • Much faster than the hard drive it usually replaces
  • Large 2TB and 4TB options at low cost per gigabyte
  • Simple drop-in install, no drivers needed
  • Well rated by buyers so far (4.7 from 53 ratings)
Cons
  • SATA speeds cap around 500 MB/s, far slower than NVMe
  • No DRAM cache, so sustained writes and heavy multitasking suffer
  • Unbranded controller and NAND mean variable parts between batches
  • No hardware encryption or bundled cloning software mentioned
  • Long-term reliability of a budget brand is unproven

What reviewers say

Buyers rate it highly overall, mostly as a cheap way to speed up old machines or add storage. Complaints tend to focus on write speeds dropping under sustained loads and on the drive's unknown internals.

Pros
  • Noticeably faster boot and load times than the old hard drive
  • Good value per gigabyte, especially at 2TB and 4TB
  • Straightforward install in laptops and desktops
Cons
  • Write speed falls off during large transfers
  • Unclear which controller and NAND a given unit uses
  • Little documentation or support software

Questions and answers

Is this drive worth it over an NVMe SSD?
Only if your machine has no M.2 slot. A SATA drive tops out near 500 MB/s, while even a budget NVMe drive is several times faster. If you have an M.2 slot, buy NVMe instead.
Will it fit my laptop?
It fits any laptop or desktop with a standard 2.5-inch SATA bay and a SATA data and power connection. Very thin laptops and most modern ultrabooks have no 2.5-inch bay, so check before buying.
How fast is it?
Expect roughly 500 MB/s sequential reads and writes, the practical limit of SATA 6Gb/s. Because it has no DRAM cache, speeds can drop during long writes of large files.
Which capacity should I pick?
256GB is enough for a basic Windows install and a few apps. Choose 1TB or 2TB for games and media, and 4TB only for bulk storage where speed matters less.
What comes in the box?
Typically just the drive itself. You supply the SATA cable and, in a desktop, a power cable; laptops use their existing drive bay. Cloning software is not included, so plan to reinstall or clone separately.
When is it cheapest?
Budget SSDs like this one tend to dip during major sales events and when a capacity is being cleared. Track the price history for the capacity you want rather than buying on impulse.
What do buyers say about the fanxiang SATA 2.5 6Gb/s Internal Solid State Drive?
Rated 4.7 out of 5 from 53 ratings.
