Our take on the Garvee 2-Stroke Gas Chainsaw

The Garvee is a 58 cc, 3 hp gas chainsaw with a 20-inch straight bar, aimed at felling and bucking medium to large trees. It has a chain brake and an anti-vibration system, features usually found on pricier homeowner saws. It is a gas saw, so it needs mixed fuel and regular engine upkeep. No current price or recent price range was provided, so there is no price history to judge today's deal against.

Questions and answers

Is the Garvee 58 cc chainsaw worth it?
It depends on price and your willingness to maintain a gas engine. The 58 cc engine, 20-inch bar, chain brake and anti-vibration system are solid specs for a homeowner saw. Check the current price against comparable 50 to 60 cc gas saws before deciding.
How does it compare with a smaller 40 to 50 cc saw?
The 58 cc engine gives more power for felling and bucking larger trees. A smaller saw is lighter and easier for limbing and light yard work. If most of your cutting is small branches, the bigger saw is more weight than you need.
What fuel mix does it need?
Two-stroke gas chainsaws typically run on a mix of regular gasoline and two-stroke oil, commonly at a 40:1 or 50:1 ratio. Confirm the exact ratio in the manual before the first tank, since running straight gas can damage the engine.
What comes in the box?
Most gas chainsaws in this class ship with the power head, bar, chain, bar cover and a tool kit for assembly and chain tensioning. Check the listing for the exact included items, since bundles vary.
Does it have a chain brake?
Yes, the specs list a chain brake. That is the safety feature that stops the chain quickly in a kickback. Test it before each use.
When is the best time to buy?
Chainsaw prices often drop in late fall and winter, outside storm season. Watch the price history for a dip below the recent range before buying.
