Is a 30 kN plate enough for driveway base work?

Yes for granular sub-base, gravel and sand in lifts of roughly 20-30 cm. For heavy clay or deep structural fill, a heavier plate or roller is the better tool.

What is the difference between this and a single-direction plate?

This one travels in forward and reverse, so you can work out of trenches and tight corners without dragging the machine back. Single-direction plates are cheaper but slower in confined spaces.

How loud is it in use?
