Is the HP 17.3-inch Ryzen 5 laptop worth it at $459?

At $459 at Walmart as of November 7, 2026, it is a fair price for a 17-inch 1080p laptop with a six-core CPU and SSD. It is worth it if you want screen size on a budget and can live with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage.

Can I upgrade the RAM and storage?

HP's 17-inch models typically have two SO-DIMM slots and a replaceable M.2 SSD, but check the exact configuration before buying. Adding RAM to 16 GB is the single biggest improvement for this machine.

Is it good for gaming?

No. It uses integrated AMD Radeon graphics, so it handles older and casual games at low settings but not modern titles. A laptop with a dedicated GPU is the better choice for gaming.

How heavy is it, and is the battery good enough for class?

It weighs 4.6 lb, which is heavy for daily carrying. HP rates battery life at up to 10 hours, so a full day of light use is plausible, but expect less with video or many apps.

What comes in the box?

The laptop, a power adapter and paperwork. It does not include a mouse, sleeve or Microsoft Office license beyond any trial HP bundles.

Budget 17-inch HP laptops usually drop around Black Friday, back-to-school season and major holiday sales. $459 is already near the low end of its recent range, so waiting may not save much.

Our take on the HP 17.3" Laptop, AMD Ryzen 5 7430U

This is HP's big-screen budget laptop: a 17.3-inch 1080p anti-glare display, a six-core AMD Ryzen 5 7430U, 8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD, running Windows. The appeal is screen size and price, not portability or speed: it weighs 4.6 lb and the 8 GB of memory and 256 GB drive are the minimums for comfortable Windows use. HP rates battery life at up to 10 hours, and it carries Energy Star and EPEAT registration. At $459 at Walmart as of November 7, 2026, it sits at the low end of its recent range, so the current price is a fair one for the specs.
