Our take on the Kawai MP11SE Stage Piano

The Kawai MP11SE is a professional stage piano built around Kawai's wooden-key Responsive Hammer III action, with 88 grade-weighted keys and ivory-touch key surfaces. It has no built-in speakers, so it is meant for stage and studio use through an amp, PA or headphones, and it carries a full three-pedal unit. At $2,029 at musicstore.com as of November 5, 2026, it sits at the low end of its recent range across the six stores that list it new.

Best forGigging pianists who want a wooden-key actionStudio players needing a realistic piano feelPlayers who already own amps or PA speakersClassical and jazz players who rely on pedals
Pros
  • Wooden, grade-weighted hammer action feels close to an acoustic grand
  • Ivory-touch key finish resists slipping during long sets
  • 256-note polyphony handles sustained pedaling and layered sounds
  • Three-pedal unit (damper, sostenuto, soft) is included
  • Line outputs and headphone jack suit stage and silent practice
Cons
  • No built-in speakers, so you must supply amplification
  • Heavy at 34 kg and large at 138 cm wide, so it is hard to move alone
  • Premium price compared with plastic-action stage pianos
  • Needs a stand and bench, which are not included

What reviewers say

Owners of the MP11SE mostly praise the wooden key action as the closest thing to an acoustic piano in a stage slab. They also note its weight and the need for external speakers as the main practical costs.

What people mention
  • Key actionPraisedPlayers say the wooden graded-hammer keys feel close to an acoustic grand and reward expressive playing.
  • WeightCriticisedOwners call the 34 kg body hard to move and recommend a case with wheels or a second person.
  • SpeakersCriticisedBuyers note there are no built-in speakers, so an amp or PA is required for any public playing.
  • BuildPraisedReviewers describe the chassis and pedals as sturdy and gig-ready.
  • SizeMixedThe 138 cm width gives a full piano layout but takes up a lot of room on small stages and in home studios.

Questions and answers

Does the Kawai MP11SE have built-in speakers?
No. It has no speakers despite the spec listing two speaker outputs at 40W, so you need an amp, PA or headphones.
How heavy is the MP11SE?
It weighs 34 kg (about 75 lb) and is 138 cm wide, so plan on a wheeled case or a helper for gigs.
What is included with the MP11SE?
It ships with the three-pedal unit (damper, sostenuto, soft). A stand, bench and case are not included.
Is the MP11SE good for home practice?
Yes, with headphones. The wooden action and 256-note polyphony suit serious practice, but you will need headphones or speakers since there are none built in.
Is $2,029 a good price for the MP11SE?
